  • Bright colours, intricately woven and geometric patterns are the hallmark of the early trade blankets and were so warm they took the place of fur in the mid 17th century.  Traditionally, Native American blankets were used for practical purposes, such as bedding and were also fashioned into warm robes. They were so valuable they could be traded for other goods.  Many were woven to represent tribal identity.
